According the CNN Heroes site, they received nearly 4,000 submissions from 75 countries that were narrowed down to 10 candidates by a Blue Ribbon Panel. I've included part of the nominees' profiles below, as they are written up on the site, but added links to their organizations and projects where I could find them.

While there has been some high-profile efforts to raise awareness and money, most recently by former football player Steve Gleason and his Team Gleason House , research efforts and awareness have been low compared to the other fatal diseases. It is a debilitating disease with no known cure.

Not two minutes had passed after I set up my birthday campaign and added it to my profile, I got pinged from Facebook friends asking how they could install it. As friends make a donation, it automically appears in your profile newsfeed. It matches real world philanthropic behavior. I've been doing this for years.
