Make a “ stretch gift ” that is very generous and is outside your normal giving pattern. Be familiar with every fundraising program, event, campaign, and activity so you can tell others (sustainers, major gifts, events, direct mail, giving circles, etc.). It doesn’t have to be a gift. Then help implement these tools.

If you host the event at a restaurant or local pub, offer a gift certificate to the establishment as a prize for the trivia winners. Encourage participants to take advantage of your local public library and get reading! Create a variety of gift basket options to appeal to a diverse group of donors and raise more money.

Many local news organizations like to host an annual food or gift drive around the holidays. Team up with local news.

It’s also a time for gifts and new clothes, making this a great chance to raise funds or donations of new clothing, especially for children. Local libraries may also be open hosting egg-hunters for a good cause. Have a float race, water balloon toss, or watermelon-seed–spitting contest to raise additional funds for a cause.

You may save some of these options for major donors, or sustainers, those who have given at least three years in a row, or donors who helped with a high stakes campaign like establishing a matching gift, putting the organization in their will, helping with a capital campaign or doing something else spectacular. Do this without a solicitation.
