This is a technique I've used as a trainer, but it also works beautifully for social media projects. Integrate quick email interviews as you say thanks with donors, pattern analysis of comments or blog posts. Several days later, Jonathan Colman set up a digg and announced it in the NpTech Friend Feed Room. It got 189 diggs.

I use a variety of tools for this analysis, including Google Analytics, Feedburner subscriber counts, and manually tracking comment to post ratios (typepad doesn't have a nifty plugin like wordpress to automate that grunge work) A tool that use to evlauate my content is PostRank. It is based on some open source code called Pligg that creates a "digg" like interface. The nptech tag stream (plus other sources) has been imported, so you can comment and vote on tagged items. npdigg.org , cooked up by the nonprofittech blog , is up and running.

It makes us uncomfortable with opening museum content up to comment, tagging, and alterations by visitors. Whether on blogs or talk-back walls, people are more conscious about their comments when they know their name will be associated with their work. But this goes both ways.

We used this technique for DIGG, forums, Twitter, Bing, and Google and then set up various searches along with monitoring of certain Twitter feeds. Post your commenting policy on your Fan Page's info tab. Retweet followers, answer questions, and comment back. Then, grab the search RSS feed and add it to your iGoogle.

Influence/Authority: Scoble defines this as % of posts that show up on Techmeme, Digg, my Link Blog, Slashdot, StumbleUpon, etc.

Kikono - Digg for NpTech. I particularly like the advice about how to use the comments for refining your point, a sort of thinking outloud and "Correct English be-damned" point. Traditional offline/online fundraising techniques still, of course, work. Kikono is the new name for NpDigg. It means antenna of an ant.
