My contribution to the panel is to provide context about the use of social media in emergency and disaster response as well as an overview of some of the tools we saw deployed last year and we may see in the future. Whether it’s direct or indirect content, why do citizens turn to social media in moments of need or disaster?

Domestic relief organizations of all kinds are no doubt mobilizing to support disaster recovery (read Molly's post 7 Tips for Quick Response During a Time of Need ). What portion of it may be attributed to the disaster-based fundraising? The impact is not only going to be offline. At most, we have warm prospects, not donors.

It’s a troubling situation and can border on outright disaster for e-commerce sites that depend on constant up-time to keep their bottom lines happy and healthy. Make a list of all affected and damaged files and determine the hacker’s intent. At this point it’s also important to assess the damage.

Every week I hear from a new nonprofit dealing with disaster from being hacked. Their systems were compromised and all of their servers hard to be taken offline. No email, no file access, no database access, no website access. Cindy Leonard has a good list of posts on the topic on her blog here. For almost two weeks.
