During my time at RISD studying industrial design, I developed relationships with two museums on campus: the Museum of Art and the Nature Lab. The Rhode Island School of Design was established in 1877 alongside its Museum of Art, an important resource for RISD students. Both are free for students.

But this week, two articles about art, in the NYT and the Washington Post Magazine respectively, called out to be combined into a post about the role of visitors in art interpretation. The NYT article is about a photography show by artist Thomas Struth at the Marian Goodman Gallery in Manhattan. So what context does art need?

I spent last week working with staff at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) on ways to make this encyclopedic art museum more open to visitor participation across programs, exhibitions, and events. The rules are clear: anyone who lives in Minnesota and considers her/himself an artist can contribute one piece.

Elisa’s focus is interactive arts, media design, and cultural management, and she has been involved in many pertinent projects, such as MUVI (the Virtual Museum of the Collective Memory of Lombardia). And that will probably happen when the kind of artistic production that uses new media will become predominant in the museums.

Earlier this year, the New Museum and Creative Time commissioned a traveling piece by artist Jeremy Deller called "It Is What It Is: Conversations About Iraq." Both times, the central square in which it was situated was well-trafficked with people enjoying art, hanging out with friends, and working.

Several were created or conceived by a single person, often an artist/non-museum professional. This is rather different than the job of other content creators--say, composers or artists--whose jobs are to create within their medium on topics of their own choosing. Exhibit designers' jobs are to develop exhibitions on topics.

It was captivating. From their perspective as 3D artists, it's annoying that Second Life only allows you to build in-world; that is, you can't create something in another 3d application like Maya and import it (yet). So give me a painting in an art museum with a video of the artist creating that painting right next to it.
