Today’s question comes from a nonprofit employee who wants advice on how to recognize and steward tribute donors: Dear Charity Clairity, Our small organization has been around for many years, but we have only just recently begun receiving donations “in memory of a loved one in lieu of flowers” for example. What would you suggest?

It needs to be warm, sincere, and prompt so that it closes the loop on the gift and makes the donor feel great about their giving experience. We call it the Cycle of Giving and here’s how it works: The donor gives a gift. The nonprofit receives the gift. It makes me wonder if I gave my gift to the right organization.

My one piece of advice to my daughter and son-in-law at their wedding was “never assume what has never been said.” Never assume they know the impact their gift is having. If you want donors to remain as excited as they were when they first gave, then tell them stories of how their gift is making a real difference in the world.

It’s the difference between seeing cook Thanksgiving dinner for 20 people on your to do list and seeing create guest list, send invitations, collect rsvps and food allergy info, create a menu, etc. For direct mail, you might want to start more like 8 weeks before the mail date because of additional production time.

Your mid-level donors will upgrade their gifts. All the research shows that donors will give more if they can designate their gift. Especially if you want your mid-level donors to increase their gift, you need to be as specific as possible. Leah Eustace ACFRE shared this cool info in her webinar recently.
