Earlier this summer, I had the huge privilege to visit Romania and help with the Local Philanthropy Workshop. It was so much fun and it was an amazing experience to work with people like Chris Worman and meet with so many local nonprofit and community changemakers. As many of you know, before joining NTEN as the Membership Director last year, I managed the NetSquared program which included locally-organized groups around the world, innovation challenges, and more. It may have been a network of organizers in various towns or locations coordinating with each other and then operating locally.

Many early adopters in the nonprofit community were already working hard (despite announcements from Google that they would police use and roll-out an organization-specific profile option) to start building a space for their organization’s profile on the new social network since it originally launched. I think this is a hard concept for many to agree with because of the process by which the social media tools are most often adopted in organizations: for example, Jane really likes taking pictures and usually posts them to Flickr (an online photo sharing website) as a way to store them, sort them, and share them.

Some include the Red Cross, The Weather Channel, local newspapers, Craigslist, and others. Since then, the platform (which is open source ) has been modified for use in South Africa (mapping xenophobic violence), DR Congo , Vote Report India (to monitor the recent local elections) and more.
