A key value of following the NpTech Tag stream, even though it is undifferiented is for finding or identifying patterns. There is a lot to be learned about our respective tagging behaviors and who contributes to the NpTech Tag stream and why. Is that a formalized taxonomy or not? A sort of "digg" for NpTech Tag items.

How are they different from taxonomies? Gavin's post does a great job explaining the definitions and the advantages of a taxonomy over a folksonomy. I've been reflecting on some of the points made about the pros/cons of the NpTech Tag and the comment that Laura Quinn left here. Obviously, it ain't no taxonomy and it shouldn't substitute for one. I think that the scanning the NpTech Tag can provide a zeitgeist. of our connected conversations and resource finds.

The NPTech tag is used on del.icio.us and Tehcnorati to designate technical resources that may be useful to nonprofits. It started right when these sites had just started, and it arose from the need to develop a nonprofit technology taxonomy. It was also discovered that people want a directory of resources.

It should be much more "human," much more "cool," and should point much more quickly and easily to the resources people need (research, tools, community for questions, etc)." There''s a lot of resources, but it''s hard to find them, as the navigation drop-down menus aren''t very intuitive, and the search function doesn''t work well.
