Empowerment for our participants comes from connecting to an inner wisdom that is often kept hidden from public view, but is a place of extraordinary innate strength and well being. In Uganda, a group of young people made incredible, heartfelt postcards filled with glitter and cut up magazine pictures to send to women in the Congo.

Consider, for example, exhibits on global warming. The design thinking behind this is that people are output-driven and want to see how their selections form a composite picture. Bottom line, this comparison has made me realize that the thing that excites me about data visualizations is this empowerment.

After meeting her at the Global Engagement Summer last spring, I knew I wanted to grab her for an interview before she became too famous. Erickson founded FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment) in 2003 when she was a 20 year-old junior studying public policy at Stanford University. Mainly it was luck.
