Should museums play music - in public spaces and or in galleries? So I thought I'd open it up to the Museum 2.0 Pros for music: Music helps designers frame the atmosphere for the intended experience at the museum. Cons for music: While silence can be oppressive, music can be distracting.

In the most extreme cases, I've talked to folks from museums that are government-mandated to provide all content in multiple languages who say they are unable to invite visitors to make comments because they'd have to translate all of them and simply can't dedicate the resources to do so.

Song Reader didn''t come as a CD, or an LP, or a bunch of digital audio files. It is what it sounds like: a book of original sheet music, beautifully designed and complemented with artwork and text. Sheet music is a beautiful analogy for this. The music he listened to on the radio "got its power" from studio techniques.

But I’d been scribbling notes for an art museum label post for awhile, and then yesterday, the NY Times had a review of a new show at MOMA, Comic Abstraction. MOMA has standard art museum labels. When I asked an art museum educator about this (“How should I look at art?”) Sounds great. The review was harsh.

For example, if you join a modern art museum, there is a good chance you won’t have to pay admission to other modern art museums. Creative stuff: Things unique to your organization including the ability to create art, music, poetry, dance, etc. A creative fundraiser can make any of these items sound attractive to the donor.

Then I went to a museum exhibition yesterday featuring a computer interactive component with a lousy interface, and thought, Yes. This week, an audio mixing game called Break in the Road. Like many DJ games, you have access to many audio pieces which you can lay on multiple tracks, mash up, etc., A woman humming in the window.

I particularly like the MP3 experiments , events at which Improv Everywhere distribute an audio file to people for free as a podcast. Participants gather in a physical venue with their own digital audio players, and everyone hits “play” at the same time. The recording starts with two and a half minutes of music without talking.
