My contribution to the panel is to provide context about the use of social media in emergency and disaster response as well as an overview of some of the tools we saw deployed last year and we may see in the future. A similar example is that of an Atlanta city councilman who chose to post a message to Twitter asking for a medic to respond to an unconscious woman on the street rather than to dial 911 when his mobile phone battery was very low. The real-time web has also revolutionized the way we support local communities in disaster.

The organization is working to build a digital public map of the Kibera community for the residents and organizations working there.

We'll be raffling off an Apple iPad, solar cell phone chargers, a t-shirt that lights up when it detects a wi-fi signal (how convenient!) The Science Fair doors will open at 3 pm on April 8, 2010 at the OMNI Hotel in Atlanta. It's completely free to your organization, and to your members as well! Lots of prizes.
