Mail, and Google Docs are all examples of cloud-based applications, also known as software as a service (SaaS). When using a cloud-based email system from your laptop for example, your machine is not doing any of the raw computations, it is simply displaying the results of computations that are happening elsewhere. I've been using it as my default on my MacBook and iMac for quite some time now. Every time Firefox or Safari comes out with a new bell or whistle, I try it for a few minutes and then go running back to Chrome. I live in Google applications (Gmail, Google Reader, Calendar, etc.) I think Google Chrome is a fantastic browser.

I can migrate their Microsoft Access applications to a free Salesforce account. Now they have no need for local applications or data. Over time, they will replace every PC with a Chromebook. They can take them anywhere they need, access all their applications and data, never worry about malware, backups, disaster recovery, etc.

As users keep moving their business-critical applications to the cloud, they realize that there is a reduced need to upgrade their systems. As smartphones mature, we’re doing more on them and less on our laptops. As a writer, I spend a bunch of my time just trying to get a hold of people. Google Drive Mobile is a free app for viewing and editing Google Docs on an Android phone or tablet. And never the twain shall meet. Tablet adoption is very brisk.
