Whether it’s global heatwaves, flooding in Pakistan, Canadian wildfires that block out the sun, decade-long droughts in Africa, or ever more powerful hurricanes, natural disasters have our attention. But climate change has been a disaster experienced slowly, and now all at once. That is no longer the case.

My contribution to the panel is to provide context about the use of social media in emergency and disaster response as well as an overview of some of the tools we saw deployed last year and we may see in the future. Another direct content example is that of the number of websites that emerged post-Hurricane Katrina. Why Social Media?

On January 12, 2010, I didn't personally experience the major earthquake that hit Haiti, but I was forever changed by it. But I wasn't prepared for the type of incoming information I saw in the weeks after January 12, 2010. . Unfortunately, this isn't Domino's Pizza and disaster response can't work as if it is.

This is the second earthquake to hit the area with such force after a first shock back in 2010. While the teams in Haiti were not harmed personally from the earthquake, the organization is actively supporting the areas that were impacted. On August 14, 2021, a magnitude 7.2

Disasters strike and organizations provide humanitarian aid - it's that simple. Direct Relief International was involved in the Haitian earthquake in 2010 and the Japan earthquake in 2011, providing aid to thousands. They're also currently involved in a very recent disaster relief effort from Hurricane Isaac.
