I wrote a blog post called, Mashups, Open APIs, and the Future of Collaboration in the Nonprofit Tech Sector. As a result, we weren’t equipping developers with a platform that allowed for more accurate location- and issue-based searches. What role do API’s, and the people who build them, play in Linked Open Data?

And they're doing it in ways that allow people to build web applications on top of the data. By now, most folks in the web development and Gov 2.0 Users can, for example, subscribe to feeds of crime incidents or view a Google Map of construction projects completed in 2009. Tell us in the comments.

It would not be as cost-effective (and thus, not produce as much profit) if these SaaS developers had to pay license fees for the software they use (besides the fact that these are the most stable and robust platforms to build upon.) There were two different kinds of APIs discussed – the ones that help organizations with interoperability within their organizational systems – getting data from one app to another, and using APIs for things like Google maps mashups.
