Everything that needs doing can be done by license voluntarily. Everything is negotiable under license, except in practice, they don’t want to negotiate about access -- because there’s not enough money involved. Do I work on this $50 million licensing deal on a short deadline? And this raises the central human rights question.

It was fun to hear students and fresh Ph.Ds I gave the opening keynote, on my main new theme, Raising the Floor. I met a professor from Portugal who had a student who developed EasyVoice , software that makes it possible for someone who cannot speak to use Voice over IP via Skype to talk to people using a voice synthesizer.

And, we raise all of that money from philanthropic sources, since the social good projects that score highest on our method are typically a long way from offering for-profit returns. We share all of our software and information under open licenses to make it easy for other nonprofits or socially conscious organizations to build upon them.

We raised a grand total of $5.7 million matching funds from our NMSU license plate affinity program, an estate gift from a loyal Aggie and additional campus matches. We had the “thank you” call center, a photo booth, entertainment by student groups and an hourly dollar announcement set up in our student union.

Through TechSoup Japan, KnK received a donation of 15 Microsoft Office 2007 licenses and Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium. "Every year, we hold a photo exhibition of children from the villages we support to raise awareness in Japan. The remaining students must hold classes outside underneath trees, if weather permits.
