My last stop in New Delhi was to visit the American India Foundation, which is the largest Silicon Valley/India foundation. Of course, people are reluctant to talk about the failures, but a few people have studied this issue. Founded in 2001 in response to the Gujarat earthquake, AIF now runs multiple programs.

Technology currently serves privileged groups through tools that provide access to education, literacy, health, and justice. Benetech is tackling these issues on two fronts, thanks to the leadership of Enrique Piracés, who joined us last year from Human Rights Watch. But what about everybody else?

We get a huge amount of pro bono assistance from the legal profession, both because of our social impact as a nonprofit, and because of the challenging and interesting issues we tackle. We are now looking for a half-time general counsel to join our team and manage the host of legal issues we are always investigating.

Literacy, particularly from birth through 3rd grade, is their primary focus because reading skills form the foundation for all childhood learning.

The ABC would wrap together efforts such as TIGAR as a sharing portal, capacity building efforts for countries trying to create accessible book services and looking at issues like licensing. My experience with the international publishers was such that I expected there would be a way to work through this issue.
