One volunteer manager at an Arizona zoo described finding new ways to teach their volunteers about wildlife: “Over Zoom, we would give presentations about the different animals in our collection… So, for example, I did a presentation on bird conservation, which was not something that we ever had before.

This not only teaches children responsibility, it can be a great way to raise funds while beautifying your community. This type of fundraiser works by encouraging children to complete age-appropriate chores for people in their community (with parental supervision of course).

We need hands on deck, so having to close our volunteer program was a challenge for us—emotionally, losing such a large part of our community—but we also had to find a way to keep them connected so that they would come back when our doors reopened. And…they know technology, so they’re also an asset to help teach other volunteers.
