The holiday has been celebrated since 1865 and was officially made a federal holiday in 2021.

One of their programs is the Reality Tours, where they bring groups of individuals to regions to look at the social justice issues and other pressing issues, that really color the experience and the culture of a place. Many of those meetings were with women. I found that trend to just be more and more.

SC: I'd started working with an organization called YouthAIDS which provides services and products to children worldwide who are affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis. This challenge benefited the Cambodian Children's Fund out of Cambodia. As a result, you have a culture of post-traumatic stress disorder. I raised a lot of money.

Britt Bravo: In so many of the groups you profiled, the women were using the arts for education, empowerment, or healing. The children are ages 6-16, and they're making huge strides by leading a national movement against child rape in Zimbabwe. The women are using those forms that are the most effective in their cultures.
