Happy Birthday! The Charitable Deduction Turns 100

I tell my students that the deduction is a “tool of government”: the federal government gives us financial incentives to spend our money in certain productive ways. If I make a donation to a qualified public charity, operating foundation, school, or even to government, my taxable income decreases by the amount of my donation.

Nonprofit Start-Up Fever Hits the Valley, Sweeps the Nation

The graph and the data I used to create it is material for one of my graduate seminars at ASU called The Nonprofit Sector , and students always seem interested in thinking about why exemptions might bounce around from year to year. In a normal month, 40 to 50 Arizona nonprofits will gain ‘public charity’ status from the IRS.
