If it’s a captioned/narrated video, the background music is very important. Just as in movie scores, the music can set the tone and enforce the message. The next technique that I am exploring in my screencasting/videocasting skill set is the addition of music. I've resisted adding music for three stupid reasons: 1. My (incorrect) perception that non-copyrighted music is crap. Finding Good Quality Music Sources Isn't Impossible. Trade Off: What value does music add?

Planet Read added subtitles to Bollywood music videos. In addition to a print book, they have multimedia content that animates the characters and adds audio narration. I also watched them use licensed characters from top Asian media properties to create a fresh set of content.

An effective nonprofit video can be as simple as a Flickr photo stream set to an audio track or a really great interview. Videos should be clear to understand if employing dialogue or music. As was noted, "creativity and passion" can overcome what is lacking in technical quality.

I had a brief conversation by email with Cory Doctorow , a science fiction author who is also a copyleft activist, who releases everything he writes with a CC license. He suggested, basically, find the publisher first, then talk about the license second. Flash (and, therefore, YouTube) is working, as is Java.
