With the goal of promoting braille literacy, this landmark meeting brought together braille experts from around the world to Perkins’ campus in Watertown, Massachusetts. Accordingly, U.S. federal law supports braille instruction.

I remember in 2005 the Global Voices Summit used IRC as a backchannel -- no so much for people in the room, but for remote participation. To make this model work, there was another IRC backchannel that streamed audio from the conference and someone did the equivalent of live tweeting.

From my office in the Boston, I teleported myself into the Virtual World of Second Life and headed straight for the New Media Consortium virtual campus where I joined about 65 other avatars representing educators from all over the world (even Austrailia where it was 3:00 a.m. Educators need to intervene and make creative alliances.
