According to ABC news : According to the trend-tracking website Know Your Meme , the cartoon fad started with Facebook users in Greece and Cyprus in mid-November. Some Facebook commenters have also pointed out the perhaps misdirected effort, posting messages skeptical of any tangible outcomes.

I identified a trend forming with social networking, and set up our very first profile. We still use Twitter a bit to talk about our programs, we participate and create our own memes like “ #felinefriday ”, but we focus on listening and responding to what people are already talking about. MySpace, back when it was cool.

Upworthy, a site that focuses on curating social cause related videos and content has been receiving a lot of media attention for changing how bloggers write headlines. And what does this trend mean for nonprofits? Upworthy is a great example of how compelling content can generate a lot of shares and comments on Facebook too.

The Dress became one of the most quickly viral memes that the Internet has ever seen. Meme Me Up, Scotty. Newsjacking is the practice of "hijacking" or leveraging a current news story to help your messages get the attention of a wider audience. As communications tactics go, memes are cheap and easy to make.
