Three examples: In the late 1980s, the Brooklyn Children's Museum created an exhibit called Send a Letter to Snoopy. As Kathy McLean noted in Visitor Voices in Museum Exhibitions , while staff were afraid that typing on the typewriter would be too hard for some young children, "kids lined up to carefully and slowly type their letters."

It was exhilarating to see them inspired to create their own meanings in response: lovers whispering together in alcoves, people of all ages writing and drawing on walls and post-its, children painting, everyone sitting rapt before screens. So many museum exhibitions relegate the participatory bits in at the end.

This is the penultimate installment of Museum 2.0's s book club on Elaine Gurian's collection of essays, Civilizing the Museum. As Elaine puts it in the essay, When I was last involved in such an endeavor, it was when the Boston Children's Museum was small, insignificant, and unselfconscious.

It also includes reflections from the exhibit team on the project. They reminded me of street vendors or great science museum cart educators, imparting an energy to the space without overwhelming it.
