Why should museums care about customer support? While I’ve never heard of a museum with such a heavy call volume that they’ve outsourced their front desk to Bangalore, many museums, small and large, suffer at the phones. The reason museums resist peer-to-peer visitor support is fear of erroneous and unvetted information.

Creating a wiki with Wikispaces (admin fee: $10) is an inexpensive, straightforward way to help your staff, volunteers, or constituents collaborate both in the office and remotely. For a great example of a Wikispaces wiki used for social media action, check out We Are Media. YouTube is one of the top search engines there is.

You can explore the project wiki where we coordinated the exhibit, including the project overview , our six-week plan to get it all done, and individual sections for development of concept , content , interaction , graphics , marketing , fabrication , installation , and evaluation. This is a good lesson for museum talk-back design.

Tagging " Beneath the Metadata: Some Philosophical Problems with Folksonomy " has been making the rounds on various nonprofit technology lists, particularly in the library and museum communities. Some nice screencasts on how to use wikis can be found at the Commons, a wiki magazine for nonprofits in Silicon Valley.
