Tenacious, Intelligent, Resourceful, Passionate, Insightful, Caring, Determined, and Fun are among the hundreds of words used to describe my friend and mentor, Simone Joyaux, since her passing last week. Then came our family trip to France, more specifically to Simone’s region of France. She soon adored them and vice versa.

I went to France. My great-grandparents were dairymen and dairywomen, so I went to France, and I dabbled a little bit in cheese making. That was really driven home when I was at this small farm in the south of France. Everywhere I go and talk about the book, it's so fun to meet a new community of food producers.

That same trend can be seen in all kinds of industries, particularly in food. When I was there last fall, I met a young woman named Paola Pereira who was the first woman in the history of this community to graduate from high school, thanks to the help from this scholarship fund.

In addition to co-authoring Grub with Bryant Terry, Anna also co-authored Hope's Edge with her mother Frances Moore Lappé and is a co-founder, with her mother, of the Small Planet Fund , and a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute , based in Cambridge Massachusetts.
