I watched the news reports from Texas and was horrified at the scale of this disaster. I grew up on the Jersey shore where I’ve been evacuated due to storms, but I have never seen this level of disaster. I also ask for recommendations for local charities from colleagues. So, I’m donating there as well.

It has been ten days since Hurricane Maria has devastated the Island of Puerto Rico. I usually take a three-prong strategy for disaster relief. I have my go-to global organizations that do a great job at relief efforts on the ground, set up funds for long-term rebuilding, or do a terrific job of vetting local charities to support.

The largest theme that is constant in disaster philanthropy is partnership. In the aftermath of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina , about 22% of total funding went to the American Red Cross (ARC).
