It works on a number of different blogging platforms, including the one I use, typepad. I might instead read through some blog feeds or find interesting links from people I follow on FriendFeed or Twitter and then bookmark posts on topics (within my "beat"). Many times ideas for topics come from reader comments.

I use a variety of tools for this analysis, including Google Analytics, Feedburner subscriber counts, and manually tracking comment to post ratios (typepad doesn't have a nifty plugin like wordpress to automate that grunge work) A tool that use to evlauate my content is PostRank. You can actually go back and review your entire feed.

I use Blogger , because it is free! If I had known I would like blogging so much, I would have set up a Typepad account, because it has more features, but Blogger is just fine and it's a bargain! Allow comments and make your pages findable by search engines. You want to encourage people to comment on your posts.
