In my experience, innovation is about flexibility, capacity, and collaborative relationships. Guard staff who are willing to let an artist step between two panes of glass to perform. That said, the fact that we work with contemporary artists can also create a lot of stress in our institutional systems.

It was started in 2003 and is run by Mark Allen and a collective of artists, many of whom have also been applying their talents by performing "interventions" at formal art institutions including LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Contemporary Art Museum in St. PieLab (Greensboro, AL). The doors of SLAM are never closed.

We''re investing a lot in a public plaza project outside of the museum. I arrived in 2011 with the explicit directive to execute a turnaround.

We experimented with many different forms of visitor participation throughout the building, trying to balance social and individual, text-based and artistic, cerebral and silly. We invited a private art school to fill a very public wall with paintings made by students in response to the question, "How would you depict love?"
