Many non-white leaders can find it difficult to achieve the desired levels of visibility outside of their sphere of influence. Some of these challenges include a lack of funding for schools, a lack of access to high-quality educational resources and opportunities, and a lack of support for students and teachers.

Technology students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. This was a great way for the students to contribute to their community. artist's influences and the exhibit, in the artist's own words. For example, YBCA's audiences loved having access to artists' own unfiltered words.

That's how I felt when artist Ze Frank got in touch to talk about a potential museum exhibition to explore a physical site/substantiation for his current online video project, A Show (s ee minute 2:20, above). He is an authoritative artist of the social web with a slew of accolades and a suite of diverse projects under his belt.

In the past, I've highlighted a few--like 826 Valencia and the Denver Community Museum --that I think have already influenced the way many traditional cultural organization do business. It's run by Jon Rubin, an artist and professor of social practice at Carnegie Mellon, and his students. PieLab (Greensboro, AL).

The Museum solicited photographs from artists via an open call on their website, Facebook group, Flickr groups, and outreach to Brooklyn-based arts organizations. All evaluations are private; all artists are unnamed. They are sensitive to the artists who are being judged. What Should Artists and Arts Organization???s

That means we collect university press, handmade artist books, zines made by sixth graders, poetry chapbooks from big names published in tiny local presses, and self-published poetry chapbooks sold for a dollar on the street. Some of the new volunteers are high school students, others are college professors.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. Who are some of your influences?
