Last month, the Japan earthquake and tsunami occurred on March 11th 2011, the first day of the conference. That morning, I saw the jaw-dropping photos and videos from the Japan tsunami disaster. Meanwhile, bloggers Leigh Duncan and Deb Ng were starting a grassroots effort to raise awareness and support for the Japan disaster too.

She's brilliant and funny and pushes people to get excited about higher math and the big ideas behind it. Many museums produce superb lesson plans, curator interviews and artist interviews for the web. She would be the best science center educator ever. But Vi doesn't work in a science museum.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. The kind of art I do is art that gets engaged into the public.
