Not too long ago, I submitted my chapter to BJ Fogg's Psychology of Facebook Applications. The chapter is an analysis of Facebook applications that help raise money or awareness or encourage people to take a social action. The winning application will receive $10,000.

I remember leaving for Vegas and making a promise to Joe that I would submit a mashup to the 2009 Change the Web Challenge. The mashup was a map showing where people were volunteering in near-real-time. Many of us are aware of open source software and open architecture, but open philanthropy doesn’t exist yet.

Facebook has lots of applications, it’s true: whether they are specifically targeted at “green&# efforts (like the lil green patch app) or not (like Causes ). We have seen awareness campaigns like World Wildlife Federation’s “wildlife watch&# (next time you see wildlife, Tweet it with the hashtag #wwf!),

Charlie is also waiting for context-aware computing, where the application will know from the user, the time, the room the workstation is in and so on, just how to react to an input. His concern is that while indeed some new techniques have come into use, simply using them does not necessarily provide better applications: The Web 2.0
