These are exciting times for everyone who’s been working to meet the accessibility imperative, as we are witnessing global movements that will increase accessible publishing and create new and better opportunities for people with disabilities. In my talk, I highlighted three global movements towards increasing accessible publishing.

We've been supportive of an effort by the World Blind Union to get an international treaty in place that sets up a global system much like the one we have today in the United States. Bookshare pretty much has been made possible by the Chafee Amendment, a copyright exception provision in U.S.

That’s the lobbying position of some companies in the intellectual property field when implementing the new Marrakesh Copyright Treaty. Our experience successfully building Bookshare under the United States copyright exception, which has no such commercial availability limitation, informs this strong opinion.

The discussion wandered from writing to advocacy to curating to poetry to copyright. We chatted about the sad decline in international newspaper correspondents , but Roger suggested that this downturn could open new possibilities for nonprofits. Of course, to market ourselves as an impartial source, we need to be one.
