At 19, New Jersey native Maggie Doyne used her life savings from babysitting to start Kopila Valley children’s home in Nepal, which has grown to a home for over 40 children, and a school serving over 200 students.

Even low-cost hobbyist drones like the Parrot AR drone quadricopter can produce and send high-definition videos and photos to a smartphone or tablet. After the recent Nepal earthquake , the Canadian nonprofit, GlobalMedic , flew drones over the affected areas to create 3D maps of the worst-hit zones.
