It's a very creative town, very community oriented, and the energy there is very supportive. I worked on the side with my massage to be able to get the income to support myself while I did something very, very entrepreneurial and very risky. The most powerful impact we found was actually in the women's leadership and influence locally.

One of the ones I am continuing to support is Women for Women International. This is my second year as a "sister," which means that I pay $27 a month to support one woman for a year while she goes through a program to help her rebuild her life after war. I also write a letter to her each month; sometimes she writes back.

One example of the incredible change that education can bring to a community is Malaika , a grassroots nonprofit that educates and empowers girls and communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo through a school, a community center, a clean water program, technical classes and and organic farm. It was a very impactful experience.

Women for Women International supports women survivors of war in conflict and post-conflict areas (Afghanistan, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Kosovo, Nigeria, Rwanda, and Sudan). Onoro, I also wrote a letter to her each month.
