What we do is essentially support social entrepreneurship within refugee communities. The model that FORGE takes is really a long-term impact framework. He ran into Congo. He was there for about a month, and then war in Congo was breaking out. We work with about 60,000 refugees from across the continent.

So often, government control, or just lack of access to information and media, prevents people from really being able to be educated and informed about serious issues that are going on around them. I had an amazing opportunity to cover the civil war, but also to cover a lot of the human rights issues that were emerging as a result of the war.

I felt an emptiness inside, as a woman, that I wasn't hearing from the teachers that I wanted to about world issues. It's a very creative town, very community oriented, and the energy there is very supportive. We publish their stories, and from that experience, a big impact was that a lot of the women got their stories picked up.
