My contribution to the panel is to provide context about the use of social media in emergency and disaster response as well as an overview of some of the tools we saw deployed last year and we may see in the future. Whether it’s direct or indirect content, why do citizens turn to social media in moments of need or disaster?

A similar example is that of an Atlanta city councilman who chose to post a message to Twitter asking for a medic to respond to an unconscious woman on the street rather than to dial 911 when his mobile phone battery was very low. We've provided training on how to interview subjects, tips for photographing and video-recording, as well as best practices for writing strong stories that encourage and elicit action.
