This question is a byproduct of the reality that most participatory projects have poorly articulated value. When a participatory activity is designed without a goal in mind, you end up with a bunch of undervalued stuff and nowhere to put it. The collective outcome (a cool music video) is clear.

Last month, the Irvine Foundation put out a new report, Getting In On the Act , about participatory arts practice and new frameworks for audience engagement. I've often been asked about examples of participatory practice in theater, dance, and classical music, and this report is a great starting point.

Consider featuring traditional music, dance, theater, or martial arts groups from the community. Curate an exhibit of paintings, photographs, sculptures or crafts by AAPI artists. Artists, writers, and cultural leaders. This galvanizes the community around your fundraising goals. Their insights enlighten attendees.

Visitors bond and bridge through participatory experiences at MAH. At the MAH Our first program goal is to meet the needs and assets of our community as defined by our community. At the MAH Our second community program goal is to build social capital by strengthening community connections with our collaborators and visitors.

I eagerly read about a new social psychology research study in which whites, Asians, and Latinos engaged in a simple collaborative activity--making a music video together. When the music video was not focused on Mexican culture, no such change occurred. But how will we know if we are actually achieving our goals?

To that end, our exhibitions are full of participatory elements. We said yes, and they have now participated in several events, offering a unique mix of traditional tea ceremony, koto music, and bedazzled plastic microphones (see bottom left of photograph). Visitors can comment on how we can improve or what they would like to see.

A cheerful curly-haired deli owner stands in front of 30 of us and shares a quote he loves: "Artists live in the present and write detailed histories of the future." It was even more useful to learn how participatory writing visions can be. The goal here is to write down as many as possible. Write about where you arrived.
