but I felt like I didn't have any alternative formats to draw on. The end of an event is one of those moments when the host has to actively practice leadership (and often abdicates). I didn't know how to kick off a productive conversation, make group decisions, or close a meeting with energy. The weird thing is that that wasn't true.

The VSA has replaced their keynotes with structured group dialogue. But the VSA has taken an intentional approach to these structured conversations with the goal of putting the (arguably) best part of conferences—the side conversations and hallway discussions—front and center. My first reaction was skepticism.

Institutions tying their online and onsite activities, as the Ontario Science Centre did when it hosted a YouTube meetup , or the Smithsonian American Art Museum did when they developed an alternate reality game. But enough of these experiences have convinced me that the participatory museum is not a fringe concept.
