Erickson founded FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment) in 2003 when she was a 20 year-old junior studying public policy at Stanford University. The projects can range from preschools, to libraries and computer training centers, to women empowerment programs. Things go wrong all the time.

Melinda: One of the interesting things about working within women's empowerment as it relates to environmental sustainability is I've really learned the ways that we talk about environmentalism is as this siloed issue. So I would say that the inspiration comes from the connection that is available through opening up a space like this.

Britt Bravo: In so many of the groups you profiled, the women were using the arts for education, empowerment, or healing. PG: I think that the one that comes to mind first is a wonderful picture of women in Kenya who are growing corn. I went to 15 countries on five continents, and interviewed and photographed 129 women.
