By now, most of us have heard about the lawyer who couldn’t turn his cat “filter” off on a Zoom court hearing, so that he appeared in virtual court as a cat. My goal is to design virtual experiences to be as inclusive and participatory as possible. I am a member of the Technology of Participation network of facilitators.

As the pandemic continues, most nonprofit workplaces will become a combination of virtual and on-site work. The hybrid workplace will have a huge impact on the way we design and facilitate meetings, the primary method of how many organizations get stuff done. Our new normal will most likely be more complex to design and facilitate.

I’m also a champion for the Blue Key Campaign which is using a Facebook Group to coordinate and communicate around our work supporting the campaign. Last year, Darim Online used a Facebook Group to facilitate a virtual book club for the Networked Nonprofit. Finally, events, like docs, also have a comment stream attached.

All of this is done virtually combining video conferencing with a collaborative tool to capture notes and ideas along the way. There are many benefits to pacing strategic planning sessions and working virtually. A well facilitated online strategic planning process has the opportunity to be the opposite of what is on the list above.

Use virtual tools to manage campaign internally (Yammer, Google Docs, Listening Dashboards, Private Facebook Groups, etc). Hold weekly interdepartmental meetings. Encourage brainstorming. Give staff space and time for creativity and to think. Develop shared language. Cross disciplinary teams.

Working With a Virtual Team. Host Ian Rhett of Civic Actions was joined by his coworker Jenn Sramek and Tom Heck of the International Association of Teamwork Facilitators. Ian and company had even set up a Google Doc where the audience could post their notes on the panel as it was taking place.
