We can use the same ebook file to deliver the content ten different ways. We can do better!

The world has finally moved beyond just electronically creating books that are then distributed as ordinary print books to actually delivering digital ebooks. This shift is already happening in major markets: Amazon.com now sells more digital books than print books. One of the biggest issues is digital rights management.

When Calera’s board vetoed my idea of a new product: a reading machine for the blind, I was distraught. In late 1999, I had just seen the original Napster product, and I knew we had thousands of families scanning the same Harry Potter book on our reading machines for people who were blind or dyslexic. He took the idea one step further.

That’s the lobbying position of some companies in the intellectual property field when implementing the new Marrakesh Copyright Treaty. Our experience successfully building Bookshare under the United States copyright exception, which has no such commercial availability limitation, informs this strong opinion.

First, it makes creating a national domestic copyright exception an obligation of countries that ratify the Treaty. Second, the Treaty allows for easier import and export of accessible versions of books and other copyrighted works. These are the digital locks that make it hard to copy digital content. Respect Privacy.

We take their files and convert them to the DAISY format which is a digital format designed specifically to create accessible materials for people with print disabilities. Check out this O'Reilly's announcement tat their ebook bundles now include DAISY talking book format files to see the fabulous work they're doing.

The digital measures designed to defeat piracy usually end up equating accessibility with piracy. Accessibility of digital media has been repeatedly and systematically denied because of digital measures to “protect” content. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is being negotiated in secret.
