Collection-tagging projects (in which visitors assign keywords to items in a collection) have always left me cold. Tagging is such a functional activity, and if you don't see direct benefit from doing it, the interest in it as a fun afternoon activity is pretty low. But I do it because it's useful to me as an organizational tool.

It’s easy to look at something like Ripley’s and think: that’s what’s the public wants. Ripley’s is not the ultimate manifestation of what the public wants. In the summer, they spend 8 weeks working full-time at the Taylor Center learning and facilitating public programs. Many of them continue to be looked at suspiciously on the bus or on the street, even when they are traveling to and from a job site where they do incredible work for their community.
