Putting this best practice into action, in 2019—two years after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico—the Amgen Foundation awarded $257,500 to the University of Puerto Rico for rebuilding efforts. . Support underfunded areas of the disaster lifecycle.

Their fundraising team got to work right away raising emergency funds to help students who were impacted financially by the pandemic. Once that money was raised, Keith and his team began making awards and disbursing the money to their students. That is separate from the regular scholarship awarding season.

As part of the large national award we received from the Department of Education, we are spending a lot more time in Washington. I was surprised to find he was aware of the controversy around the big Bookshare.org award and asked sharp questions about how we were dealing with challenges around delivering on this.
