The Day aims to raise awareness of disability issues with a focus on the rights of persons with disabilities and the benefits derived from their integration in the social, economic, cultural and political life of their communities. Of course, accessibility is right up Benetech’s alley and the focus of our Literacy program.

There was also an associated effort called the Trusted Intermediary Global Accessible Resources (TIGAR) project, to ease the exchange of accessible book files between libraries for the blind and print disabled. The Stakeholders Platform and the TIGAR project were time-limited and needed to be replaced by a new structure.

At this conference in 2005, the backchannel was projected on the screen behind the speaker. Raymond raised some good reflective questions about backchannels that are still very relevant four years later as back channels goe more mainstream and search for best practices on how to incorporate them into our conferencing experience.

While the speakers were talking, the avatars in Second Life were carrying on a lively debate in chat about the points raised, suggesting questions to be asked in the room in New York City, and passing along urls/resources related to the discussion at hand. He noted that media literacy has to be integrated as a skill set in all places.
