The land and funding came from William Curtis, the son of a local ship captain, who turned down money from Carnegie to build his community’s library himself. It started with one lighted sign in Portland, Maine.

The space reminded of the many artist-run spaces and community centers I've visited when I worked with the New York Foundation of the Arts. These unused computers can't be recycled at our local dump.
