Museum visitors can use the in-app camera to photograph individual works of art which the app recognizes to serve up information about the piece, comments from past visitors, and for some works, audio orientations from the artist. This app is heavily informed by its content and can adapt with each new exhibition installed at the museum.

It was started in 2003 and is run by Mark Allen and a collective of artists, many of whom have also been applying their talents by performing "interventions" at formal art institutions including LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Contemporary Art Museum in St. PieLab (Greensboro, AL). The doors of SLAM are never closed.

If anyone out there is considering creating an industry catch-all site for museum-related content, I highly recommend Gamasutra as a model. When I’m in MOMA, at least I know that as I go from room to room of the main collection, I’m not “missing” any particular era, genre, or artist. The City Museum of St. Can I touch?
