Changes in the application happen without your knowledge or consent. As the limitations of both AJAX and Flash are overcome (and as both develop further) expect even more usability for online applications. Also, you can access the applications anywhere you go. Your data is not directly in your hands, but in the hands of a third party.

Open has 3 components, APIs, Database Connectors, and Extensions. The geek in me thinks the Convio APIs are wicked cool, since they allow you to do client programming via AJAX, as well as more standard server-based programming. Convio has, seemingly, gotten some serious Web 2.0 They work by REST via POST, or JSON. Be Helpful.

It was really hard to try and write new applications building on a framework I’d written a while ago, while simultaneously improving that framework, and keeping up with new things such as Ajax and RSS, mostly by myself. But that was not so often, and, as staff in that organization left over time, that relationship changed.

To the extent that APIs make widgets possible, these nonprofits benefited from the use of open platform technology. The sea-change in nonprofit adoption of APIs has yet to occur. Thats because to-date, the major constituent relationship management databases didnt have open platform APIs. But widgets are just the beginning.
