Whether it’s global heatwaves, flooding in Pakistan, Canadian wildfires that block out the sun, decade-long droughts in Africa, or ever more powerful hurricanes, natural disasters have our attention. For example, Hurricane Katrina, in August of 2005, presented as a once-in-a-generation disaster. That is no longer the case.

Then I plunged (late) into a session called “Discover a Hacker’s Mindset,” with Pablos Holman, which was chock-full of traditional hacking (lock-picking, credit card slurping) along with hacking the world: one on maintaining the arctic ice pack and the other on preventing hurricanes.

Imagine a hurricane bearing down on an isolated village. For example, basic SMS and telephone messaging are being used to educate students in remote areas of Pakistan, to control the spread of HIV/AIDS in South Africa, and to raise funds for East African drought relief. Worst of all, many villagers will be injured or killed.

Give a copy of Love Letters from the South , a beautiful photography book that pays tribute to all those affected by Hurricane Katrina. A percentage of each (PRODUCT)RED product sold is given to The Global Fund. Habitat for Humanity's Operation Home Delivery.

Since then, the platform (which is open source ) has been modified for use in South Africa (mapping xenophobic violence), DR Congo , Vote Report India (to monitor the recent local elections) and more.

Why not give a small donation to help a school in Africa, like Epic Change's projects or find a project in a corner of the world that is meaningful to you. It's also one of the worse months for hurricanes and the Red Cross has made it easy to give a donation with your cell phone through its text 2 give program.
