Last Christmas at breakfast, rather than under the tree, she presented her two daughters, son in-law and three grandchildren with a set of different colored nesting boxes, the kind that, when empty, fit inside each other. Inside the box was a brochure for the Oakland Zoo. The son in-law received "Stanford football tickets!"

Unwilling to sit by and watch, I took action in my local community by patrolling San Francisco Chinatown with Asians in America, Inc. Patrol volunteer offering PPE to local Chinatown residents. to deter violence and crime. . In addition to individual action, there is great power in turning to my Salesforce.org community for support.

Well, Chris Waters of the Nomad Cafe in Oakland not only thought about it, he made it happen. Both of those laws passed and are now in effect. We participate in the City of Oakland's Maintain-a-Drain program, and do our part daily to remove litter from the street in our neighborhood. green cafe business Oakland

The primary need, obviously, in our community, West Oakland, is a lack of access to healthy and affordable foods. If we can begin to build that at a local base, we can begin to create jobs that are associated with that new structure that we create. These are a lot more of the sort of peripheral aspects of this problem.

I think at the national level we're always going to have The New York Times , CNN, and The Washington Post to do national investigations, but what we really are threatened to lose in the next year to five years is local investigations and local reporting. Obviously, local civic journalism is incredibly important to me.
