Understanding the foundation of what makes the instructional design so effective, can go a long way in transitioning some of your organizational learnings over to a digital medium. Try not to overdo it, but do not be afraid to use splashes of color, integrated music, modern conversational language/dialogue, humorous components, and narrative.

The MP3 experiment is an exercise in following instructions. The recording starts with two and a half minutes of music without talking. He explains that you will have to follow his instructions to have “the most pleasant afternoon together.” Two and a half minutes in, the “omnipotent voice” Steve introduces himself.

On the evening of the second night, I had the honor of meeting to Bill McCann, the inventor of Dancing Dots , a software that adapts music technology for the blind. These youth come live in an immersive environment to learn the skills necessary to transition from family to independent living. Bill is also blind himself.

Side Trip is an immersive environment full of interactive experiences that let visitors share their own stories of the 1960s, make their own rock posters, and explore the music and vibe of the time. There are two aspects of Side Trip that really stand out: the immersive environment and the design of the interactives.

To be eligible for the prize, your exhibit must be on the theme of "Art, Film, Music & Technology." Casting it as a walk-through tutorial, with a bit of interaction thrown in, will hopefully turn arduous "instructions" into a fun and informative experience. But no one was going to read all that text.

I watched many entertaining shorts featuring students explaining exhibits to the beat of popular and illegally uploaded music. How does it help the Exploratorium to listen to these environments if they can't be controlled? If I'm an engaged spectator in the groundswell--using Yelp!
